Congress has announced candidates for two crucial Lok Sabha seats in UP - Rae Bareli and Amethi, putting an end to the suspense. Rahul Gandhi will contest from Rae Bareli, while the party has given the ticket to KL Sharma, a close aide of Sonia Gandhi, from Amethi. The voting for both these seats will be held in the fifth phase, and the candidates will be announced on the last date of nomination by Congress. Despite the news of Rahul Gandhi contesting from Amethi, the party chose KL Sharma, raising questions about why they did so. Rae Bareli and Amethi have been strongholds of the Gandhi family for a long time, with talks of Priyanka Gandhi contesting elections from Rae Bareli and Robert Vadra expressing his willingness to contest from Amethi. The party's decision to make a non-Gandhi candidate from Amethi indicates a return to its old traditions, according to experts. In the early 1990s, a by-election was held after the sudden demise of Rajiv Gandhi, the former prime minister of India. During this time, Satish Sharma was selected as the candidate to represent the Congress party. This event bears a resemblance to a current situation. KL Sharma, the future candidate of Congress from Amethi, is known to be a leader close to Sonia Gandhi, having worked as her MP representative in Rae Bareli for a long time. He has been doing organization work in Amethi and Rae Bareli for almost four decades and is well-known among all Congressmen in the area. KL Sharma was present when Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination from Amethi for the first time in 2004, and now, after twenty years, he is going to contest elections in place of Rahul from the same Amethi. It remains to be seen whether the party's decision to give the ticket to KL Sharma will be successful in saving the seat or not, as Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi with 55,000 votes in the last elections.
