On Monday, a tragic incident occurred in Mumbai; during a dust storm and unseasonal rain, an illegal 100-feet billboard collapsed on a petrol pump in Ghatkopar, which resulted in the death of at least 14 people and the injury of 74 others. In response to this tragic incident, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an order to remove all hoardings in Mumbai immediately.BMC Additional Commissioner Ashwini Joshi has passed an order to remove the remaining hoardings under the Disaster Management Act.
The Mumbai Police Commissioner, Vivek Phansalkar, has assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible for this incident. He visited the incident site on Monday evening and spoke to journalists, stating that they would take strict legal action against those responsible for this accident. A case has been registered against Bhavesh Bhinde, owner of M/s Ego Media Private Limited. Others have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at Pant Nagar police station.
According to BMC officials, a search and rescue operation was going on at the petrol pump located in Chheda Nagar on Tuesday morning. The billboard was illegal, and no permission was taken to install it, as per civic officials. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the incident site late Monday evening and ordered a structural audit of all hoardings in the city. He announced Rs 5 lakh assistance to the families of each person killed due to the falling hoarding.
Furthermore, he added that if the hoardings are found illegal and dangerous, they will be removed immediately. He announced that the government would investigate the matter and take necessary action against those responsible. He also asked the BMC Commissioner to conduct a structural audit of all the hoardings in the city and remove those found illegal and dangerous.
This incident is unfortunate and has caused great distress to the citizens of Mumbai. The immediate removal of hoardings is An essential step to ensure people's safety, and the government's commendable efforts to investigate and take action against those responsible.
