(File) (Image Source: ABP LIVE AI) China-Taiwan Relations: China, following an expansionist policy, now has its eyes on Taiwan. The dragon claims the Asian country is eager to seize it. Perhaps this is why it has deployed the People's Liberation Army (PLA) around Taiwan. China's recent military drill has not only increased concerns for Taiwan but has also put neighbouring countries in tension.
According to a report from China's state-run news agency Xinhua, the Eastern Theater Command of the PLA has initiated joint military drills surrounding Taiwan. These drills commenced on Thursday (May 23, 2024) morning at 7:45 AM. The areas where these drills are being conducted include the Taiwan Strait, northern, southern, and eastern parts of Taiwan Island, along with the areas near Kinmen, Matsu, Wookiu, and Dongyin Islands.
Joint Sword 2024A' is the codename for China's military exercise. As per spokesperson Li Shi of the Chinese Army's Eastern Theater Command, the military services (army, navy, air force, and rocket force) are conducting joint drills. These drills will continue from Thursday to Friday, and the operation associated with this military drill is codenamed Joint Sword 2024A. This drill focuses on the coordinated seizure of extensive war zones, joint maritime-air warfare-readiness manoeuvres, and coordinated precise strikes on key targets.
What will happen in China's joint military drill?
According to Xinhua, ships and aircraft will remain in the vicinity of Taiwan during the military drill. By doing so, the combined combat capabilities of command forces will be tested. The drill serves as a strong warning against separatist activities of the "Taiwan independence" forces, foreign interventions, and provocations. The increasing presence of the Chinese military around Taiwan could escalate ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Interestingly, the joint military drill is being conducted at a time when tensions between Taiwan and China are escalating. Taiwan is located in the eastern part of Asia. The Taiwanese administration has long considered itself an independent country known as the Republic of China (RoC). There has been a sovereign government there since 1949. However, China has also long claimed this island, which has a population of 23 million. China asserts that Taiwan is a province of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
