On this day in 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Investigations revealed that his assassination was carried out by a female suicide bomber who had strapped a bomb to her body. She approached Rajiv Gandhi, pretending to touch his feet, and then detonated the bomb strapped to her waist. The explosion resulted in the deaths of Rajiv Gandhi and 18 others.
